I was just wondering if anyone was already looking into the Playdate ROMs, if the console were ever to go away, and the catalog of games were just to cease to exist. It is clear that the games do have some sort of DRM on them, as purchased games won’t run in the emulator which they provide for development, so I’m not sure how possible it is…
I’m looking into it, but was wondering if I was the only one, or of there were others also doing so. I did do a search on here but couldn’t find anything related to the console, so wasn’t sure.
I have done a lot of work on Panic Playdate preservation in the past, including writing decryption scripts for Catalog titles. You can find it available as a private set within DOM.
However, I have halted work on the Playdate project indefinitely because I'm a perfectionist by nature and to-date I have yet to find a way to call previous versions from the CDN. Missing out on intermediary versions with no recourse (like I have v1.07 and v1.09 but I missed out on v1.08 by a day etc) was very frustrating and stressful, so I abandoned the project a while ago.
If there was ever a way to call the earlier versions of a game, or if No-Intro would allow me to exclude the earlier versions and only include the latest versions, then I would continue since I wouldn't have to worry about missing out on datting older versions of games. But unfortunately No-Intro is accretive by nature, which doesn't mesh very well with digital-only ecosystems.
That makes complete sense. Especially with the nature of some of the newer games, particularly Blippo+ in Season 2, because it seems to load/cache new content from a server on a weekly basis, there is no way to save it.
