I'm trying to scan the GP32 set in clrmamepro and it's really having problems fixing the names of certain files. It looks like the directory names are all garbled (must be due to the language)? In any case, has anyone been able to successfully scan and fix a complete set? It seems like it's impossible...

Here are some of the error messages I get when trying to have clrmamepro fix names (can't paste them all in because of post size limitations). It never seems to get them right:

I'm guessing the files and folders were in Korean. At least that's what I thought the problem was when I encountered it.

I guess that's the problem, it's just weird that clrmamepro can never rename the files properly. I mean, I can go in there in Windows and set the names, but then when I zip the files up the names change back. Maybe it's a limitation of the zip format to support weird control characters?

I guess my point is that how did the original datter ever create this dat, scan the roms, and have it work?

You could try to disable OEM/ANSI conversion under Settings -> Compressor...
* OEM/ANSI conversion

This option handles OEM To ANSI / ANSI To OEM conversion on filenames inside archives. Keep this enabled as long as you don't use and non-standard characters in the datfiles/archivefiles. If you get rom renaming issues and you know that the dat includes such characters, toggle this option and try again. Keep in mind that this conversion heavily depends on your currently selected codepage.

Well, I didn't expect this kind of problem. You are right, the GP32 DAT contains Korean (Hangul) characters and it is not No-Intro compliant.

All No-Intro DATs must use only lower ASCII characters (20-7E, contained in Unicode's Basic Latin Block) with typical character exceptions which are not allowed in filenames or are not allowed by No-Intro Convention

The attached pics shows character distribution in a No-Intro compliant DAT (I've used the GBA P/C) and in GP32. The third pic shows the hangul characters in the GP32 DAT when viewed using a proper code page (I used EUC-KR). The last pic shows the lower ASCII charset.

I will delete all this crazy pics in a couple of days.

EDIT:

As stated in Massacre's quote that would allow Korean characters in filenames but only if OS codepage is set to some sort of Korean one. That's why we require only lower ASCII chars, because they are properly recognized and displayed worldwide.

Yeah, I tried to use the OEM/ANSI switch but it obviously didn't work because I don't use a Korean codepage.

So... I guess the dat has to be fixed to be No-Intro compliant? :?

I suppose the datter used the original file structure, so if you modify the subfolder names, you'll get bad dumps.

The real problem is the format used by this dat. It should use a binary format (a single file). Also this dat has (cracked by WRG) tags which are doubtfully conventional.

It was already discussed before. The datafile is compliant to convention, because you just can't rename the folders or files. The other format for roms must be used to make this problem disappear. For now GP32 set is a mess (and Nokia N-Gage too).

I agree with Blade Arts. Assuming the file splitting & specific naming is required on this system for the dumped data to work, you would be altering dumps by transliterating the Korean directory names.

However I think that's your only option for now. Modify (transliterate) the problematic subfolder names in the DAT itself, then run it on CM. You should add some kind of note elsewhere to remember the changes you made to dumps.

Long term solution would be to DAT some kind of ISO files, preserving original directory naming and structure, which would not cause OS conflicts when handled By ROM managers.
