XMDB's

Post by BIrvine »

Hey - I'm considering incorporating the no-intro goodmerge filename data into the official xmdb files for goodmerge -
I'm wondering though - is there a tool that generates the equivalent to a *have.list thats necessary for them to work with No-Intro? I didn't see any mention of it, just one for ClrMAMEPro/RC merging.

You can quickly generate a miss/have list file using either RC or CMPro ROM managers by loading the corresponding No-Intro DAT. It's a bit more tricky when using CMPro: after scanning your collection, right click on the "Scan Results" window and select "Save -> Miss/Have List..."

You need to rename your ROM collection to match No-Intro's naming before being able to use the No-Intro XMDB file anyway. And the have list file contents are specific to each user, so no reason to supply it.

The problem that you'll run into is that the goodtools are kind of an all-in-one package. Each tool analyzes your rom set, organizes it, renames it, and spits out information about which files you have and don't have.

The NoIntro project is different. Clrmamepro and Romcenter are the most often used tools, and we build datasets in ways that support these two specific tools. However, there is no mandate that any user use either one or the other of these tools, and there is no restriction from using some other tool, as long as said tool supports the established file format for one of these two tools. All No-Intro does is provide information about the games for each system.

So, by not having any input into how the tools are built, we really have no say in the output of such tools. I know Romcenter can be asked to create a have list, but this is really at the discretion of the user -- there is no automatic output of such a file. Clrmamepro probably can create such a file, but I've never had a reason to test such functionality.

Actually, I feel that bIrvine's help would be much better put to use in reviewing the Parent / Clone lists and helping identify instances where we may have missed relationships for some games. But please be aware that, following Kazumi213's lead, we are a bit more conservative in what we consider to be the "same" game in the No-Intro P/C lists. For instance "Jeopardy!" and "Jeopardy! Sports Edition" for a given system are truly two separate games. The parent / clone organizations are reserved strictly for instances of the same game appearing either with different revisions, or in different regions.

Please also note that, unlike the good tools, No-Intro focuses on actual releases. No-Intro will include find released, but unlicensed games (like those from Wisdom Tree), you will not find hacks, translations, etc. for which there never was an official release. Basically, if we find it on a cartridge from the actual company (even if a beta or proto), we'll include it. If we can't find and validate a true cartridge, it won't be listed.

@ Kazumi : Thanks - I didn't realize that feature was in ClrMame, and I don't use RC. Thanks!

@ Alexian : Yes, I'm fully aware of how No-Intro's project works, their standards, parent/clone info, naming convention, etc. I'm also aware of ClrMame/RC and DAT creation in general, I just wasn't aware of how an equivalent of a havelist.txt was formed. From what I can tell, the P/C lists are pretty accurate. Regarding the issue with Jeopardy, I simply haven't updated them in a while - its in my todo list! (i need a 40 hour day - not enough time in my life)

Basically, this would just be to incorporate merging capability into one official file, so users who have one or both sets could use the same file for whichever set, or merge both sets at once with pieces of each (if they choose). The program will be updated soon. If you all are interested, let me know! If not, no hard feelings!!!

Sorry to ask BIrvine, but are you the GoodMerge developer?

Because I have some (not very technical, sorry) suggestions regarding file management which would allow for better support of multifile game systems (like Amiga).

I've figured out a workaround to be able to handle such systems with current GM, but at the cost of being forced to use uncompressed ROMs as source.
