Hi all.

Here's a SNES DAT which features:

- No-Intro naming, as of NGEfreak 20071019 DAT
- Parent-Clone relations
- ROM merging support
- Regional parents support (one game, one ROM list generation option according to user region preference)

See included readme.

tetsuo55 and I hope you like it.

This has too many differences to my merged set to list, so I'll post the Files log and you can see what ya wanna take from it.

Merging of similar but not exactly the same roms \ tetsuo55 on 12th October 2007, 09:12 wrote:

I have been comparing the list, and indeed i have found some corrections, still have to test some others.

The most of the differences in you dat is the way BS games are merged.
Currently i have only merged BS games that are exactly the same (different dumps of the same game)

However many BS games where episodic, so basically the same game but with different levels, sometimes there is a full game available too.

The problem we run in here is: to merge or not to merge.
Ususally the only differnce would be language, but in these cases (and some full roms too) there are different levels and or gameplay.
My question is:

What is the tolerance level for merging, how much does a game have to differ for it to get its own seperate status? (or how much does it have to be the same for it to be merged?)

My suggestions are:

Only merge subroms(like BS) with parent fullrom, if subrom content is exactly the same as the parent rom. (in other words the bs rom doesnt offer anything new, "(sample)" falls into this category nicely)

Only merge subroms(like BS), which do not conform to above or do not have parent fullroms, if the content of both subroms is the same (for example a redump with a different (but correct) CRC)

yeah, most of the BS ones I just merged based on the name, so I'm not qualified to comment on that. Like I said, use what you will, once it becomes official no-intro, I'll abide by your dat and re-merge them your way :)

Ok, I've been working on comparing both P-C lists.

First I've reformatted prince_albert's list. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but according to your list all your archives are "family" archives, even when they only contain one single ROM, so all use untagged naming.

After fixing that, I've found your list was missing 1 ROM:

Harukanaru Augusta 3 - Masters New (Japan) (Rev A)

which I've added.

Then I've found that you've made a lot of "custom" merging, not based on parent-clone relations. I'm not familiarized with SNES, so I'm not sure, but I've removed the following 57 ROMs for a better comparison of both lists:

The result are 2 comparable files excluding the above 57 ROMs. There are still around 260 differences which include custom merging in prince_albert's (to be discarded) and actual missing P-C relations in tetsuo's. So thank you very much prince_albert.

tetsuo please, compare both files and send me a fixed P-C list. Take your time ;) . Only real P-C relations. Otherwise 1G1R lists would be unreliable.

my list is from a good merge files.log, so it ignores all tags for set naming. this isnt important. also i used the goodsnes goodmerge xmdb for a starting point, so some of the errors may have come from there also, as well as some guesswork without checking if they belong together. i was more concerned with saving diskspace coz it was a goodmerge p-c list, so i understand that many of the roms which go together in that sense dont actually belong together in a more pure parent-clone dat. but if any of it helps then im glad to contribute.

It seems there are some missing P-C relations in current SNES P-C DAT. Corrections are always appreciated ;)

i had a look using Active File Compare, and I see what u mean. A high percentage of the differences are bs-roms and japanese ones ive never played or looked into and just assumed from names. I think there were one or two relationships I missed, which disappoints me, but theres a few im pretty sure belong in there too  . Look forward to the update.

there are bound to be mistakes made, the whole manual selection and editing thing is error prone, but luckily we can all work together to fix any problems we find.

the first p/c dat i made was completely hand picked (what a pain that was!)

This dat is based partly on that hand picked list, and mostly on the snes-xmdb + some common sense. the biggest problem with the xmdb is that its full of roms no-intro does not need and mering is done based on rom-alikeness not based on if its the same game.

I wonder if many other systems suffer from problems like BS games.

what other sets are you working on? ive also merged my gbmono, mega drive, nes, and n64 sets, so if u want any of these ill find the files.log and post them here. theyve probly got a few errors due to being based originally on the goodxxxx xmdb, but there might be something useful.

Will these become "official" No-Intro dats? If so how does that happen?

Whether this kind of DAT become official is to be decided by experienced No-Intro Project leaders through internal discussion. Some of them are here since the very beginning of the Project.

It is important to note that this kind of DAT contains the exact same info as the official one. It just tries to add some additional (and optional) functionality.

EDIT:

While tetsuo55 is fixing some p-c relations, I've decided to update the DAT to latest No-Intro 20071019.
