NES PC10 ROM information

Those of you that work on the NES/Famicom dat probably already know this but just in case I wish to post some stuff I have known about the PC10 ROMs for some time but haven't got around to mentioning.

We all probably know about there arcade roots so I'll skip that bit. Anyway contained on the end of all the PC10 ROMs floating around the net is 8KB of none NES data that served as the menu in the PC10 cabinets. If you strip this data out of the ROMs and run them through the NES DAT most of them are 100% identical to the standard consumer carts. However a few of them are not (19 in total). Some of these have changes from the consumer carts such as Rad Racer disabling the 3D mode and Mike Tyson's Punch Out having a battery backed save for saving players fight times. The rest have as yet unknown changes.

The reason I wanted to bring this up is I feel some of these 19 (17 excluding racer and tyson) ROMs could in fact be correct dumps of consumer carts. With these ROMs roots in MAME I believe they can be assumed good dumps. Just something to think about and possibly look deeper into.

The 19 games are (from GoodNES):

Baseball Stars (PC10).nes
Captain Skyhawk (PC10) [!].nes
Castlevania (PC10).nes
Contra (PC10).nes
Double Dragon (PC10).nes
Double Dribble (PC10).nes
Gradius (PC10) [a1].nes
Mario Open Golf (PC10) [!].nes
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (PC10).nes
Nintendo World Cup (PC10).nes
Pro Wrestling (PC10).nes
Rad Racer (PC10).nes
Rush'n Attack (PC10).nes
Rygar (PC10).nes
Super Mario Bros. 3 (PC10).nes
Tecmo Bowl (PC10).nes
Track & Field (PC10).nes
Trojan (PC10).nes
Volleyball (PC10).nes

On a side note I would not mind seeing these 19 ROMs work there way into the DAT.

Unless I'm mistaken, I thought the purpose of the No-Intro dats was for 'clean' ROM preservation. By this, I mean cartridge specific dumps and not what I would consider just game code/data. I don't see how NES/Famicom data used for a PlayChoice 10 arcade system is relevant to a NES/Famicom cartridge ROM dump dat. Having said this, I notice some GameCube Zelda revisions in the N64 dat so maybe No-Intro will consider these PC10 as viable dumps.

Also, since the dumps are being 'preserved'/emulated by MAME, I think they are in pretty safe hands. :) I don't think that with MAME program revisions and ROM 'Rollback' sets being collected, we are ever likely to lose the dumps and ability to emulate them.

BTW, this wasn't a dig at your post, generalleoff, just some quirks that I wouldn't like to see in what I consider at the moment, very good dats.

Yeah, I'm with Chucky on this. Unless a PC10 rom is different than the NES (except for the menu of course) I don't see much purpose is stripping it. If I remember correctly, some of the GameCube roms are somewhat different than the original NES roms (other than something just tacked on like a menu) so it makes sense to me to archive those.

Thats not even what I said. I said most PC10 games are the same as the home carts. 100% identical. Some games that are left over have clear and obvios differences (Rad Racer, Mike Tyson) while others do not. So in my eye there is POTENTIAL that at least a few of the PC10 games are in fact good dumps of home carts that are currently bad dumps.

So we should re dump home cart versions of what is left of the PC10 games to see.

If I recall correct several of the GameCube rips did end up being proper dumps to some home carts that were previously dumped bad and have since gone on to replace them in the dat. The updated copyright games aside.

I'm sure anyone here that is dumping ROMs has already thought of this anyway. I just would rather mention something thats already know then not mention something that is not already known
