Genesis\Sega Meganet split?

Post by Gary_Oak »

Sega Meganet games could only be obtained through the use of a special Mega Drive add-on called the Mega Modem. A separate device that would store all downloaded games in it's internal memory and run them on the console.

Considering these games could only be ran through that add-on (not through any native means such as a cartridge), and the nature of the peripheral itself, I thought that it would be best to create a separate dat for these games.

The Meganet is very similar to the Nintendo/Bandai's Satellaview service, which is also going through some discussion as to whether it should get its own dat or not (along with the Sufami Turbo):

Since I actually got back to looking into this..

While technically I believe you are correct about the original Meganet material, the ROM databasing on them is a bit shakier for the following reasons;

1) Unlike Satellaview games, there were no MegaModem games that "required" the Megamodem to run per se - you can check the emulated ROMs for this. A few of them used the MegaModem's networking captability, but also were seemingly designed to disable it if this was absent.

2) To the best of my knowledge, absolutely no MegaModem dump going around is actually archived from the MegaModem itself, but rather, ripped from various latter-rereleased materials, such as online Sega services that offered Megadrive emulation (Notably the ones I can remember were apparently buried in the Dreamcast ISO of "Dream Passport 3", a Sega Cell Phone emulation subscription service of some sort, and, if I heard/remember correctly, the Sega Ages version of Phantasy Star II for Playstation 2.)

3) There are so few MegaModem dumps (and, to my knowledge, they're of every MegaModem game that's known to have been released) that the database would be incredibly small.
