PICO-8 and TIC-80

Post by Gary_Oak »

I was wondering if there would be any interest in preserving these "systems" given that both the PICO-8 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PICO-8) and TIC-80 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TIC-80) are fantasy consoles (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantasy_v ... me_console). Nonetheless, they both have their own set of games (with the PICO-8 in particular, funnily enough, the "carts" are presented as PNG files with all data stored within them) and active communities still developing games for them (with PICO-8 being the most popular).

I actually conducted research into cataloguing PICO-8 on No-intro when I added Arduboy.

There is a complete archive which scraped the Lexaloffle BBS in its entirety from February 2023 that could be datted as-is, but a theoretical PICO-8 DAT would have a whopping 23,382 entries and would require a lot of manual fixes for wonky filenames. For example:

And it still needs to be updated for all games released since then. It's ultimately quite a massive project to take on if we're aiming for comprehensiveness. I unfortunately do not have the time to take on more datting projects, I have enough on my plate as-is. But there is certainly potential!

I highly agree that we should preserve those catalogues.
I also started a reddit post about a fitting naming convention some time ago:
