Neo Geo & Saturn Official Spellings

Post by Gary_Oak »

The official spelling of the Neo Geo brand tends to be rather inconsistent. I've seen it written on official product pages as:

NEOGEO
NEO•GEO
NEO-GEO
NeoGeo
Neo•Geo
Neo Geo
Neo-Geo

No-Intro uses NeoGeo, but Redump uses Neo Geo.

The Saturn can be often confusing as well. In Japan, Sega clearly calls it Sega Saturn, but in the US/Europe I think it was just Saturn. Redump uses Saturn, but No-Intro uses Sega Saturn.

What would be the most correct/official spellings?

I seem to recall a recent forum post or DoM ticket about this, but I can't find it...

But iirc, the most common official rendering in normal text seemed to be "NeoGeo".

But yeah would be best to find that post about it...

That's because IT IS inconsistent.
It depends on what system you're talking about, the brand name changes over and over again.
In No-Intro's case, with the NeoGeo Pocket and NeoGeo Pocket Color, the nomenclature is absolutely CORRECT.
In every console manual, game manual, box-art, in-game screen, etc, these two systems are always stylized as NEOGEO POCKET and NEOGEO POCKET COLOR, with no space and no dot between NEO and GEO.
So, in this case, NeoGeo Pocket and NeoGeo Pocket Color are the correct forms to use.

Anyway, regarding the Saturn name's inconsistency, sadly I've no information, sorry.

It IS consistent.

As for Neo Geo, and following Japanese Wikipedia, it should be either NEOGEO or NEO GEO (the median point ・is used in Japanese for marking a space when using overseas names and as such is to be understod as a space).
Then, looking through Japanse NeoGeo manuals, it is always spelled NEOGEO and ネオジオ, which should then be used as NeoGeo for No-Intro.

And it is SEGA SATURN worldwide. Just overseas, people are used to just say "Saturn", but official naming is Sega Saturn.
