SMS in Game Gear dat?

Why are there listings in the Game Gear dat with .sms file extensions? I realize that the two systems are similar, but shouldn't Master System games be in the Master System dat? I see many of these same games in the SMS dat, but they have different validation codes. Strange.

Those are GameGear games that run in SMS mode on the GameGear, the file extension is the only way to know if the rom is supposed to run i GG mode or SMS mode (The header can tell you if it's a GG or SMS game but not which mode it's supposed to run in).
