[2600] Various renames, grammar fixes, corrections

Post by dukdukgoos »

This is my first post here, so please let me know if I'm doing this wrong. I've been going through the Atari 2600 ROM set lately and noticed a few issues:

Bobby is Going Home
>>> Bobby Is Going Home
(Box art shows ALL CAPS title, but normal English convention is to capitalize "Is")

Going-Up (USA) (Proto)
>>> Going-Up?? (USA) (Proto)
(Description can be changed to include the problematic "?" characters without changing the filename, correct?)

Jungle Fever ~ Knight on the Town (USA)
>>> Jungle Fever (USA)
(These are two separate ROMs that were sometimes sold together in a double-ender cartridge, not variant names for the same game)
>>> Knight on the Town (USA) should be added as a separate ROM, CRC=ACEA70A6

Lady In Wading (USA)
>>> Lady in Wading (USA)
(Box art and English convention says "in" should be lowercase in the title)

Party Mix - Bop a Buggy, Tug of War, Wizard's Keep, Down on the Line, Handcar (USA)
>>> Party Mix (USA)
(The individual minigame titles are not shown in the box art title)

Snail against Squirrel (Europe)
>>> Snail Against Squirrel (Europe)
(Box art show ALL CAPS title, but normal English convention is to capitalize "Against")

Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The (USA) (Proto)
>>> Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The (USA)
(This ROM with CRC EC389CAA was not a prototype but a released game. There was a separate ROM with CRC EA9A4268 for a quite different prototype version that should be added to the db as a separate entry)

Treasure Island ~ Duck Shoot (Europe)
>>> Treasure Island (Europe)
(I can find no mention of an alternate title of Duck Shoot. There seems to be an undumped alternate called Treasure Discovery though)

Walker ~ Schussel Der Polizistenschreck (Europe)
>>>Walker ~ Schussel, der Polizistenschreck (Europe)
(Comma is in original title of "Schussel, der Polizistenschreck" and "der" shouldn't be capitalized)

Xevious (USA) (01-18-1984) (Proto)
>>> Xevious (USA) (1984-01-18) (Proto)
(This seems to be the standard for prototype dates in other ROMs, as it sorts better [YYYY-MM-DD])

Please let me know if this format is adequate or if there's additional information you need.

Thanks a lot for this project, I love accurate metadata and you do a great job!

I've set "Bobby Is Going Home" back to "Bobby is Going Home", as one of the No-Intro naming conventions is to have lowercase "joining" words.

I found CRC32 ACEA70A6 on the web, so I got the size and other hashes from that file and added them. But I couldn't find EA9A4268 - maybe you can provide the size in bytes, MD5, SHA1 and SHA256?

It would be great to get some first or second hand dump information for the Atari 2600 dat (currently its all dumps from who knows where). That way we can have some primary sources for the naming/tags and get some entries marked as "trusted" or even "verified". I wonder if you know of anybody who might be interested in providing such dumps (or know of a website where someone has posted information like that)?

Fair enough. I thought perhaps the description field could be changed to the accurate title without changing the filename with the illegal characters, but if not then it can't be helped.

"Is" is the verb of the sentence and therefore should always be capitalized, even though it's a short word.

Per the naming conventions: Generally all common names, adjectives and verbs should be uppercased.

I think the Atarimania site has the most thoroughly curated 2600 ROM collection on the net, but they don't provide first hand source information for all the ROMs. Perhaps reach out to them to see if it's something they have in their database but don't make visible on the site?

Don't mean to nitpick, but I agree with this, words like "Is", "Am" (verb), "It" (noun) are capitalized even though short.

We seem to follow Wiki style if we wanted to put a name on it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia ... al_letters

Another one I forgot to add in the original post:

Aliens Return (Europe)
>>> Alien's Return (Europe)
(Per the box art the title has an apostrophe)

Actually, I've added it to the "Sticky Note" field - just forgot to say in my previous post.

My mistake. Reverted the change.

Thanks, added it to the database. https://datomatic.no-intro.org/index.ph ... =88&n=0731

I'll send them an email. But suspect what you can see on the site is all they have.

First, thanks for making those changes, I appreciate it! There are a few more things I noticed looking over the DAT:

Looks like one of the Bobby Is Going Home entries wasn't updated with the capital "I". The rest of the Bobby ROMs are okay.

Code: Select all

	<game name="Bobby is Going Home (Europe)">
		<description>Bobby is Going Home (Europe)</description>
		<rom name="Bobby is Going Home (Europe).a26" size="4096" crc="F061E27F" md5="2823364702595FEEA24A3FBEE138A243" sha1="50E26688FDD3EADCFA83240616267A8F60216C25" status="verified"/>
	</game>
Also, the Texas Chainsaw prototype was marked as a Beta. Not sure what the difference is to be honest, but it's usually referred to as a prototype on the various sites.

Code: Select all

	<game name="Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The (USA) (Beta)">
		<description>Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The (USA) (Beta)</description>
		<rom name="Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The (USA) (Beta).a26" size="4096" crc="EA9A4268" md5="2D15B092E8350912EC4B2E5E750FA1C6" sha1="1F1660223ABEEE3113C3F75BF4D9CBB3B1CF49E4"/>
	</game>
Also, the Xevious change I suggested was made correctly, but I realize now there's another slightly earlier prototype that probably should have the same renaming treatment to be YYYY-MM-DD (1983-08-02)

Code: Select all

	<game name="Xevious (USA) (08-02-1983) (Proto)">
		<description>Xevious (USA) (08-02-1983) (Proto)</description>
		<rom name="Xevious (USA) (08-02-1983) (Proto).a26" size="8192" crc="2EF09F4A" md5="C6688781F4AB844852F4E3352772289B" sha1="73133B81196E5CBC1CEC99EEFC1223DDB8F4CA83"/>
	</game>

Made those two fixes. Its a bit counter intuitive, but No-Intro naming uses "Beta" to mean "pre-final" and "Proto" to mean "unreleased".

Makes perfect sense, thanks again!
