[GBA] Most Classic NES games are overdumped

Post by endrift »

It seems that the vast majority of the Classic NES/Famicom GBA dumps are 4 MiB, however the vast majority of the ROMs are actually 1 MiB that mirror across the whole ROM address space. I've seen a few people take photos of their ROM chips that confirm, showing them as 8 Mbit ROMs.

The exceptions are the Famicom Mini FDS series (22 through 28, EXCLUDING 21, 29 and 30), which are normal 4 MiB ROM chips and don't mirror. I've only got a copy of 28, but I was able to verify it didn't mirror.

I mentioned this in the mGBA IRC channel a while ago and I think this was relayed privately to at least one person here, but now that I've got a copy of 28 I was able to confirm that the FDS 4 MiB ROMs don't mirror.

I don't see a list of volume numbers for FDS games but judging by an ebay listing for the set (a collector set with the official display box so I'll assume they cared enough to put them in order), would that be:
21 = Super Mario Bros. 2
22 = Nazo no Murasame-jou
23 = Metroid
24 = Hikari Shinwa: Palutena no Kagami/Kid Icarus
25 = Link no Bouken/Adventure of Link
26 = Shin Onigashima
27 = Famicom Detective Club
28 = Famicom Detective Club Part II
29 = Akumajou Dracula/Castlevania
30 = SD Gundam Gachapon Senshi
(I recall my copy of Nazo no Murasamejou was sent mismatched from the seller with the correct inner (cart) box and papers but the outer box to Shin Onigamshi.)

That looks right. The titles in some dump lists have the series numbering in them too. I forgot to correct the mistake in that post (I have 28, not 29) also.

Here's a photo that was posted in my IRC channel of one of the 1 MiB ROMs--notice the 800 on the model number: https://i.imgur.com/P5P1wbL.jpg
And here's a photo of one of the FDS series games with a 4 MiB ROM--notice the 32 on the model number: https://datomatic.no-intro.org/sources% ... _front.jpg

The former is I believe the European ROM of Legend of Zelda, and the latter is I believe the Japanese ROM of Metroid.

Can only imagine getting the two unnumbered (and I believe they were prize distributions?) games for redumping and confirmation would be quite a pain (Dai 2 Ji Super Robot Taisen and Kidou Senshi Mobile Suit Gundam: Hot Scramble). :P

Both of those are Famicom games, not FDS games, so...hopefully they fall into the usual 1 MiB category.

Redumped my only Classic NES series with a Sanni's Cart Reader and got this.

Size: 1,048,576
CRC-32: 0B6CA48A
MD-5: C0A26AE6D6BC38E07F87C9A860DE8586
SHA-1: 22EA42AD9A99A6BC0FCBA8721CF8F484F68C3BF7
SHA-256: 732560BE6C6957B809C9CC821D0F03C3842C61AF220C0A61DC77FFB0F695E862

So I guess that can be used to recheck older dumps.
