[REQ] PS2 and XBOX digital

Post by HeroponRIkiBestest »

I'd like to request that

Sony - Playstation 2 (Digital)
Microsft - XBOX (Digital)

be added to no-intro, for datting games and updates to games for their respective systems. Since their next-gen counterparts, the playstation 3 and xbox 360, already have dats for this, I think the ps2 and xbox should receive equivalent dats as well. I have an xbox hard drive that should have at least some updates on it that I'd be willing to contribute once a dumping procedure was established.

I think to first establish a dumping procedure for Xbox, we'd need two dumps of the same game (and game version) from two different consoles - that way we know which data needs to be stored separately so the "main" data can be recorded with a consistent hash.

Out of curiosity, why did you specify Xbox? Wouldn't the same process need to be done for ps2 as well?

Just because I seem to remember someone saying that xbox downloads had unique-to-each-console data alongside the normal game data. Also, what digital PS2 stuff are you talking about? I forgot to ask :P

I guess you mean this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStati ... disk_drive
From googling, it seems there may be some homebrew or PC tools that allow you to read/write to the hard drive. But I can't find much info on it, so it'll probably require some practical experimentation, like with the xbox.

Yea, although https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStati ... _Navigator gives you some more information for downloadable games, as the wikipedia hdd page only goes over 5 games that had updates (I'm fairly sure, at the very least, that front mission online had updates) and no games that were downloadable. I don't 100% know every game that was downloadable, but I know there were a few organized... places for download? storefronts? (I'm not entirely sure how they worked) like the Hudson Channel.

Also, is it possible to move this topic to Website, Forums & DAT-o-MATIC? I could've sworn I posted this topic there to begin with, but I guess not.

What digital content did PS2 even have?

From what I recall of that generation, only Xbox had a hard drive standard (PS2 had the one essentially made for Final Fantasy XI, that some physical games, like FFX and even then possibly just the Japanese or International version, had the option to install data to, but there was no sort of online marketplace).

From looking at the Wikipedia list, the HDD was supported in many more Japanese games to store data for faster load times, including a number of games there were released in North America with the HDD support removed. Probably due to the nearly three year difference in release between the two regions. (it seems the PAL version had little or no release?)

As I said, check the link I sent, which discusses a handful of the online downloadable titles. They required the Ps2 broadband navigator disc, which was only sold in Japan. This video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMrODmg8z24 shows gameplay of some of the games from the "Hudson Channel" I mentioned.

Also, the wikipedia link Hiccup sent does mention that FFXI, Tetra Master, Nobunaga no Yabou: Online, PlayOnline Viewer, and JongHowLo all used the HDD for updates, which need to be datted. Additionally, various websites, including https://web.archive.org/web/20070510163 ... /1832.html, mention Front Mission Online having updates.

Unless someone finds an existing project/website for this, or can find the URLs in the wayback machine or something, I think we basically need some second-hand PS2 hard disks that still have data on them...

I mean, aren't second hand items with data on them how most things are dumped? Anyways, apparently ps2 hdd preservation is already being started here https://www.obscuregamers.com/threads/1122/ and apparently http://psxplanet.ru/forum has some dumps as well. I don't know too much about those forums personally, though.
