Mega Drive/Genesis unlicensed games from Accolade and EA

Post by BigFred »

Several sources in the web point out that Accolade and EA started with releasing unlicensed games for the Genesis before later on becoming licensed members of SEGA's party. I wondered because of the weird box design used by Turrican and I did a little research. It looks like SEGA did not like these releases and redesigned their console to make these games unplayable on later hardware-revisions. Example http://www.turricanforever.de/forum?id=373

Some people compiled lists earlier:

More detailed info: http://www.segaretro.org/Accolade

We need to do a little research and accurately mark all games in question as unlicensed in our db.

Old post, but... According to Sega-Retro, some of the titles we currently call (Unl) actually have licenses. Sometimes production started as unlicensed, but post-lawsuit they were reissued with Sega's stamp.

In these cases I think we will need to check the cart labels to be sure - look for the text "Licensed by Sega Enterprises...". For example, these from Accolade:
* Test Drive II - The Duel (http://segaretro.org/File:TestDriveII_M ... lassic.jpg)
* Winter Challenge (http://segaretro.org/File:WinterChallen ... assics.jpg)
* Super Off-Road (http://segaretro.org/File:SuperOffRoad_MD_US_Cart.jpg)

* Summer Challenge (http://segaretro.org/Summer_Challenge) says it was reissued but no scan yet.

Somebody else can check the EA and Codemasters releases! :whistling:
